Cars, Curfews, Parties, and Parents
What an excellent way of expressing parents thoughts and concerns. As parents we have either said these things or thought them. Very easy to read (kind of like David Letterman's TOP TEN). My teenagers enjoyed reading this book. It created many family conversation and help see things threw the other persons eyes. Written with a touch of humor. EXCELLENT!

A BOOK THAT I CAN ACTUALLY USE!
I'm a 13-year-old female and this book has tips that helped me get along better with my parents and friends. It even helped me feel closer to God. If you are a teenager buy this book and read it now! If you're a parent or even just a kind adult, buy this book for a teenager (or pre-teen) you love. It helps them in ways that you can and cannot see.

Managing Director
If people psycologists could do as good a job with people as Pam Johnson-Bennett does with cats, we would have a saner and more mentally healthy society. As a pet sitter for the past 12 years, we heartily endorse Pam Johnson-Bennett's books on cats.

great health info, well written, sensible
I found great information for my cat's diet and health, plus first aid & psychology. I gave this book as gifts to several of my friends, and they like it a lot, too. The "Vitality Mix" recipe has helped my cat immensely.

Celebrate! With Little Quilts
Published in Paperback by Martingale & Co Inc (November, 1995)
Authors: Alice Berg, Mary Ellen Von Holt, and Sylvia Johnson
Average review score:

beautiful production
These publishers are the greatest. They consistently top the competition. This book offers so many visual gifts to its readers, and since the quilts are small, the projects are producable within a reasonable amount of time. I just let my eyes meander through the book, and I am inspired to get back to the sewing machine. It is written in a friendly style, without the typical clinical and off putting language that we find in so many other quilt books. The quilts are photographed so clearly with such vibrant colors. I dare anyone to read this book, and not turn directly to her fabric stash and begin dreaming of the next project!

You'll want to make EVERY quilt in this book!
This is such a terrific book if you would like to fill your house with quilts in a short time! All of the quilts in the "Little Quilt" collection are a wonderful addition to any quilt library...

Character Styles
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (May, 1994)
Author: Stephen M. Johnson
Average review score:

A Buried Treasure
Over a ten year period, Stephen M. Johnson wrote a series of extraordinarily useful and well organized books integrating theories of personality development and therapeutic objectives at neurotic and borderline functioning. In the introduction here he writes about his integrated theory: "It is not psychoanalytic, not object relations, not self-psychology or ego psychology. It is not behavioral or cognitive or affective. It is not characterological, developmental, interactive, phenomenological. It is not theoretical, empirical, experiential, intuitive, or deductive. It is all of this and more in a mix. It attempts to answer important questions with the information available. For each of us who are curious about such questions, this is what we must do."

Character Styles includes revised chapters from Characterological Transformation, Humanizing the Narcissistic Style and The Symbiotic Character, but the addition here of chapters on masochistic, hysterical and obsessive-compulsive characters makes the entire series a little masterpiece. Dr. Johnson's work seems to have grown most out of The Symbiotic Character since, as he writes, "the strategies found successful in liberating the symbiotic character can be of nearly universal significance." The first books in the series contain diagrams for energetic body work based on Reich and Lowen that are curiously missing here.

The major character styles he addresses include The Hated Child: The Schizoid Experience, The Abandoned Child: The Symbiotic Withdrawal, The Owned Child: The Symbiotic Character, The Used Child: The Narcissistic Experience, The Defeated Child: Social Masochism and the Patterns of Self-Defeat, The Exploited Child: Hysterical Defenses and the Histrionic Personality and The Disciplined Child: The Obsessive-Compulsive Personality.

My copy of Character Styles is dogeared and contains scribbled notes that are a record of the development of my own understanding and thinking about personality over the last ten years. I owe that development and understanding and where it's taken my thought today much more than I've realized to Dr. Johnson's insightful, compassionate, well-referenced work.

This non-psychologist couldn't put it down!
Once I started a chapter, I *had* to read it through no matter the hour. Despite the jargon, despite the too infrequent "for example"'s, he clearly describes a dozen friends, relatives and, of course, myself -- *anyone* whose early childhood is known to me. His uncanny grasp of my "inner life" experience astounded me and was worth the price right there. I particularly appreciate his using the same structure for each chapter, always winding up with that style's Therapeutic Objectives. Professionals should also appreciate his indicating what difficulties a therapist can encounter when treating a given style. This is one of the three most important and rewarding books in my forty years of reading.

The Chase Era: 1933 & 1942 Catalogs of the Chase Brass & Copper Co.
Published in Paperback by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (01 January, 2000)
Authors: Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina
Average review score:

Fantastic Finale
In this concluding book in a series of four about the history and products of the Chase Copper and Brass Co., the authors present the first (1933) and last (1942) catalogs of Chase's consumer products...and a wonderful surprise. The catalog pictures are crisp and clear, and the contrast between the early and last product offerings can be easily compared. But the first publishing of a series of pre-1933 "flyers" that were Chase's first "catalog" make this a must-have reference for collectors. Nine new pieces are shown, and new, additional information is provided about several other items previously attributed to Chase. Definite 5 star kudos to the the authors, Don Johnson and Leslie Pena, for this wonderful resource.

The Final of Four on Chase
This book is the final of four outstanding books by these two accomplished authors. Any Chase collector or deco enthusiast should have them in their reference library. This book features reprints of original 1933 and 1942 Chase catalogs, factory information, and pre-1933 reprints of Chase Specialty flyers, some of which have never been published before. Pictures of newly discovered Chase products will be a great help to Chase collectors in identification of their wares. This book is a must for all those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship that came from the Chase factories. Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina should be commended for putting together this four part Chase reference set, this book being the final one of the four. Highly recommend!

The Chickasaw Rancher
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Colorado (December, 1901)
Authors: Neil R. Johnson, C. Neil Kingsley, and Arrell M. Gibson
Average review score:

actual summary info from book sleeve (additional info)
First published in 1960, Neil R. Johnson's The Chickasaw Rancher, Revised Edtion, tells the story of Montford T. Johnson and the mixed and intermarried Chickasaw settlements of Oklahoma (and Indian Territories). Abandoned by his father after his mother's death and then left on his own following his grandmother's passing in 1858, Johnson had control of a piece of land in the northern part of the Chickasaw Nation (and some in the Oklahoma Territory that was often occupied by the Boomers) in what is now Oklahoma.
The Chickasaw Rancher follows Montford's family and friends for the next fifty years. Neil R. Johnson (Montford's grandson) describes the work, the ranch parties, cattle rustling, gun fights, tornadoes, (the unexpected return of Montford's father after a thirty-three year absence, trips to Florida and New York City), encroachment of white settlers, the run of 1889, the hard deaths of many along the way, and the rise, the fall, and the revival of the Chickasaw Nation. (The original edition ends with Montford's death in 1896. The revised edition covers the next generation's continued expansion of the family's business ventures ending with E. B. Johnson's death in 1935).
Including more than fifty previously unavailable photographs, illustrations, and maps, (and more than 20% new material) this revised edition of The Chickasaw Rancher, edited by C. Neil Kingsley-grandson of Neil R. Johnson-is the perfect addition to any reader's collection of the history of the American West.

Real Life of an Indian Cowboy
This book is a most unusual account of life on the range. It describes the life of Montford Johnson, a friend of Jesse Chisholm, from around the time of the Civil War until after the land runs in Oklahoma prior to 1900.
The unique value lies in the specifics of living on the range, the daily routine of the cattle drive, and the reality of cowboy life.
Taken largely from the journal of his son, it's a story that Hollywood could use.

Chinese Village, Socialist State
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (May, 1991)
Authors: Edward Friedman, Paul G. Pickowicz, Mark Selden, and Kay Ann Johnson
Average review score:

chinese village, socialist state
This volume makes important contributions to our understanding of the Chinese revolution. . . . The entrenchment of networks of loyalty among local leaders and higher level officials of the emerging party-state is a central element of the authors' analysis. As the state extended its control over both the urban and rural economies, it increasingly monopolized the allocation of scarce resources. . . . Given the authors' trenchant critique of the Communist party's economically irrational commitment to rapid, large-scale collectivization, it is unfortunate that they have not addressed the implications of their work for the decollectivizing rural reforms of the post-Mao era, when many aspects of the peasant household economy have been restored. Perhaps there is a sequel in the making

Insightful and informative
It has been two years since I read this book, but I see it hasn't had a review yet, and I think it deserves one, so I add my two bits.

A very detailed analysis of the developments in rural Chinese society over a period of massive upheaval. Provides tremendous insight into the social mechanisms at play, and the interplay of contemporary political movements with the traditional power structures in rural China. For anyone interested in or involved in rural development in China, a drama which is still going on in the 21st century, a must read. Also recommended for anyone interested in the interactions between policy-directed, centrally planned development and the way society responds to it.

Would like to see a similar follow up on the years between the cultural revolution and the present.

Christian Acts of Kindness
Published in Audio Cassette by Audio Literature (January, 2000)
Authors: Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, Edward Asner, Meredith Macrae, Janet Fontaine, and Arte Johnson
Average review score:

A gentle but powerful nudge
As stated in the preface, acts of kindness need not be elaberate or planned. This small book is a treasure trove of esperiences of kindness, given and received. Some are big, like a complete christmas provided for a family down on its luck. Some are small, like not hitting back. It is a reminder that we all have the capacity to reach out. I took this book to church with me, in case the services got too boring. I read it, my kids read it , and I have since reread it several times since. A gentle nudge towards becomming a kinder person.

beautiful reminder
This small book made an important difference in my life. Example after example of people being kind to each other penetrated and softened my pressured, irritated heart, and made me a better person. It reminded me of something crucially important, something I had forgotten. And how wonderful to be reminded. When I began to put kindness and love into practice, the world transformed from something dull and disappointing into something beautiful and sweet. This is a book about the most important thing in the world.

Informative!!!
This is a wonderful resource tool. If your particular ministry is struggling or is in a bind, this resource offers helpful Godly solutions that very well may be the answer to your prayers.

Excellent Information Source for Christian Education
I just finished reading this book (9-15-00). It is a great compilation of articles written by different people on the subject of "Christian Education." It covers the Nature of CE, the Teaching-Learning Process, and relates it all the to scriptures and the church. It is a tremendous resource for CE because at the end of each chapter there are included many other resource books for further reading and research. It is well written and well documented.
